The Duck Volunteer Fire Department began in 1982 with a small meeting of 19 concerned citizens. After the initial organizational meeting, the department became incorporated as a non-profit organization, governed by the Bylaws established by the membership and the Board of Directors elected from the membership. The membership proceeded to build its fire station on land owned by the Army Corps of Engineers. The station construction consisted of countless hours of volunteered labor of the firefighters and approximatley $72,000 in materials. The station was completed in 1983 and the department proceeded to purchase firefighting equipment and apparratus, operating on an intitial annual budget of approximately $26,000. Today, the DVFD provides fire protection coverage for the area described as the northern border of the town of Southern Shores to the southern border of Currituck County including the Sanderling community, bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the Currituck Sound. Major revenues for the operation come from fire taxes paid by Duck property owners, and additional revenues are realized from donations and fund raising activities.
