Ten miles south of Salvo, the village of Avon rises up out of the flat, desert-like Hatteras Island landscape. Avon was originally called Kinnakeet, a name that is still used by true natives. The name changed when the village got a post office in 1883. The area is steeped in its history of lifesaving, fishing and boat building.

At one time Kinnakeet was known for the schooners that were built there and used for oysters. Old Avon Village, where many locals live, is filled with wonderful old-style cottages on pilings to protect them from sound side flooding. Practically every yard in old Avon Village contains a boat. Avon once had two active lifesaving stations and a large maritime forest, but the locals cut down almost all the trees to use in the shipbuilding trade. With the loss of trees, the dunes began to migrate and suffocated the remaining trees.
Avon's oceanfront and strips along Highway 12 cater to vacationers. The village has the island's only large chain grocery store and the only movie theater plus campgrounds, cottages, hotels, restaurants, surf shops, watersports outfitters and much more. The fishing pier is popular and reportedly a good place to catch red drum. Just south of Avon is the Canadian Hole, one of the most popular windsurfing spots on the Outer Banks. It was named in honor the Canadian windsurfers who frequent the place. On a windy day you'll see hundreds of colorful sails zipping across the Pamlico Sound.
