Beaufort is also home to a number of attractions including the Rachel Carson Reserve, part of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve. Natural beauty, and preservation of natural resources add to the town’s charm and appeal. With almost 4,000 local residents, the town has long been economically driven by fishermen, merchants, sea captains, and crewmen. Today, visitors can revel in this maritime history by visiting the North Carolina Maritime Museum which includes the artifacts from the wreck of Queen Anne’s Revenge, flagship of Blackbeard the pirate and, arguably, one of the most significant marine archaeological sites ever found. A popular way for a visitor to become acquainted with this picturesque southern town is via a tour of Beaufort's Historic District by double-decker bus. Highlights include 12 restored Colonial homes and town buildings, the Old Burying Ground and several other historically significant sites. Beaufort accommodations range from historically charming bed and breakfasts to quaint beach cottages to luxury marina condominiums.
