Buxton is on the widest part of the island, and it's here that the banks take a sharp turn and the beaches face a more southerly direction. The point of land that juts out into ocean at Buxton is called Cape Point, and it's one of the best places on the Outer Banks for surf fishing, especially for drum. Surfers have nicknamed this area the "wave magnet" because it's such a good break. Surfing competitions are held at the beach here every year. The 180-foot, diagonally striped Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, stands at Cape Point and towers over this busy little community. Threatened by beach erosion, it was moved 300 feet away from the ocean in the summer of 1999, receiving a wealth of national attention in the process. It is open for climbing. Cape Point Campground, one of three national park service campgrounds on Hatteras Island, is near the lighthouse and is a great place for quiet, rustic camping.
Buxton Woods, one of the few remaining maritime forests in the country, provides a rarity at the coast-shade. Walk through this fascinating ecosystem on the Buxton Woods nature trail. Something unusual in Buxton is the Double L Bird Ranch, an aviary with hundreds of birds and bird shows. Watersports, shopping and restaurants are all well covered in Buxton.
