This village at the southernmost point of Hatteras Island often gets overlooked because it shares its name with the island, the inlet, the cape and the lighthouse. When locals say "Hatteras," though, they mean the village. Hatteras Village sits along the shores of Hatteras Inlet, which separates it from Ocracoke Island.

Prior to 1846, when the inlet opened during a hurricane, Ocracoke and Hatteras villages were on the same island and people could walk between the two. A post office was established at Hatteras Village in 1858. In 1861, the Hatteras area was the first portion of the Confederacy to fall victim to Union forces. During WWII, this area became known as Torpedo Junction due to the loss of more than 100 ships attacked by German subs.
Hatteras Village has always been one of the most populated villages on the Outer Banks, especially since the opening of the inlet. Commercial fishermen and recreational anglers use Hatteras Inlet for quick access to the superb fishing of the Gulf Stream. Several marinas, with charter boats and commercial fleets filling their docks, are located in the village. Anglers from all over the world come to Hatteras Village during blue fin tuna season in the winter. Many old-style and big, new cottages are available for rent. The locals cater to the tourist trade with small, family-run motels, restaurants and shops.
The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and more upscale shops have recently come to Hatteras Village, down by the ferry docks. The free, state-run Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry terminal is at the very end of the island.
