On the north end is the site where the first English colony settled in the New World in 1587. The colony disappeared a few years after settlement, and their story is told on summer nights at The Lost Colony outdoor drama. On the same property are the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and the formal Elizabethan Gardens, the perfect place for an escape from the sun. Also on the north end is the North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island, which just received a $10 million upgrade.
In the middle of the island is the 100-year-old town of Manteo, named after one of the Indian chiefs from Roanoke Island who met the English on their 1584 trip to the new world. The other Roanoke Island town, Wanchese, is named for the other chief. Manteo, the Dare County seat, is a pleasant place to spend an afternoon, or a weekend. Bed and breakfast inns, beautiful old homes, shops, art galleries, restaurants and attractions are all within walking distance of each other downtown.
Just across the waterfront is Roanoke Island Festival Park, which further commemorates the history and culture of this island. At the south end of the island, Wanchese is a pastoral fishing village that has remained true to its roots. Ride through Wanchese and you'll see crab-shedders, fishing trawlers and seafood companies that ship seafood all over the world. As you're leaving Roanoke Island to head to the beaches, the sprawling waterfront community of Pirate's Cove is on your left. Pirate's Cove is a world-class marina and the point of departure for many charter fishing boats and head boats.
