Heading south on Highway 12, after driving past miles of open scrublands, the first town you approach on Hatteras Island is Rodanthe. Several towering cottages greet you as you enter town. This little village seems to be joined at the hip with the towns of Waves and Salvo, and indeed at one time they were one big lump known as Chicamacomico.

By the early 1900s, Chicamacomico had broken out into three villages: North Rodanthe, South Rodanthe and Clarks. Their modern names came later, with the establishment of post offices. The villages are similar, but they have individual personalities. Rodanthe is the liveliest of the three communities, with the most vacation amenities and commercial offerings. The island's only major go-kart/waterslide park monopolizes a large portion of the village. The beach at Rodanthe is known in surfing circles for its good wave breaks. North of Rodanthe is Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, which has wide, crowd-free beaches and nature trails for viewing a great variety of birds.
The historic and rustic Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station-one of the original seven Lifesaving Service stations on the Outer Banks-is in the village. This station was the site of an internationally famous rescue in 1918 when six surf men saved 42 men from the burning English tanker, Mirlo, after it was torpedoed by the Germans. The Coast Guard decommissioned the station in 1954, but it has been restored and is now one of the most complete Lifesaving Complexes on the East Coast. The main station houses an exhibit on Outer Banks shipwrecks, and a lifesaving re-enactment is held once a week in the summer.
