Traditionally a fishing community, Salvo is still home to many people who make a living on the water. The oceanfront is lined with rental cottages. The National Park Service closed its Salvo campground due to funding cuts, but it still maintains a sound side day-use area just south of the village that is popular with windsurfers and picnickers.
Originally called Clarks or Clarksville, Salvo got is name in a most interesting way. The legend goes that during the Civil War, a sailor aboard a Union ship passing off the coast of Hatteras Island spied the town of Clarks but couldn't find a name for it on the map. He informed his captain of this, who said: "Give it a salvo (simultaneous firing of the cannon) anyway." They did, and the sailor then wrote "Salvo" on his map to mark the town. The town took on its new name in 1901 when it got its own post office. The postage stamp-sized Salvo Post Office was one of the smallest post offices in existence and got a lot of media attention in its day. It was so small that when the new postmaster took over, he or she would simply jack the post office onto a boat trailer and move it to his or her yard. Burned by an arsonist in 1992 and never reopened, it is now restored and sits in the yard of former postmaster Edward Hooper. You can see the tiny red and white building on the west side of Highway 12. Now everyone goes to Waves to get their mail.
