The Southern Outer Banks is comprised of Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island that fringe northeastern North Carolina. Access to Hatteras Island is limited to the Oregon Inlet Bridge to the North and the North Carolina Ferry System to the South. Ocracoke Island is accessible only through the North Carolina Ferry System, from the North through the Ferry Docks in Hatteras Village and from the South through Swan Quarter. Floating between the Atlantic Ocean and an inland system of wide, shallow sounds, the islands’ best qualities are their remoteness from mainland ways.
Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands on the Southern Outer Banks are renowned for world-class fishing on the Gulf Stream, surfing, windsurfing, kayaking and bird watching, but there is more to these islands than outdoor adventure, dining and shopping. The Hatteras Lighthouse, located in Buxton, is the tallest lighthouse on the East Coast and is open to the public. If you have the courage and the strength you can climb to the top for an unprecedented view of the Island. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was moved in 1996 and you can view exhibits on this historic move at the National Park. Hatteras Village also features the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, which is a tribute to all of the seamen, which have navigated the dangerous waters of Diamond Shoals. Be sure to ask the staff about the Enigma Machine that they are restoring on site, it is one of only a very few remaining machines from WWII that the Germans used to transmit secret codes.
Ocracoke has its own unique style, quaint shops and idyllic views offer a glimpse of days gone by. Tour the historic village and while there, visit the Ocracoke Lighthouse, which is open to the public, but is not open to climb. One of Ocracoke’s most famous residents was Edward Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard. There are numerous areas on the Island with information about this infamous Pirate that once made the Outer Banks his home. While visiting Ocracoke, be sure to stop by the Pony Pens on Highway 12 north of Ocracoke Village to see the wild ponies that once wandered the island.
We also have a recently started Relocation Guide which includes properties for sale, realtors, builders and more. This Relocation Guide includes a Relocation Services section which features mortgage lenders, appraisers, surveyors, and attorneys to make your home buying as easy as possible, as well as moving and storage companies to facilitate your transition to Hatteras or Ocracoke Islands. There is a Homeowner Services section to include businesses such as landscapers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, flooring specialists and trim carpenters so that you can easily find the companies to help you make your home, a castle. So keep checking back, as we will continue to work to provide you with the most comprehensive, detailed website available.
