Yellowhouse Gallery, an Outer Banks icon, was founded in 1969 by "Uncle Jack" Sandberg, and was housed originally within the First Colony Inn. In 1977, a 1935 Outer Banks cottage located at the 11 milepost on the Beach Road became this Outer Banks gallery's permanent home. Over the years, the Yellowhouse Gallery on the Outer Banks grew to feature an extensive collection of antique maps and antique prints, Civil War Prints as well as modern artwork with a local, Outer Banks flair. The gallery features many Outer Banks Artists which will provide you with a taste of the vibrant art scene on the Outer Banks.
In 2006, Eve and Pete Turek bought the gallery from Sue and Jack Sandberg and in the gallery's 37th year, we opened for our first season. Seasonal visitors who have visited the Outer Banks Yellowhouse Art Gallery as part of their annual vacation--as well as local residents and second-home owners--will be pleased to learn that the Sandbergs will continue to contribute their extensive knowledge to Yellowhouse Art Gallery by acquiring antique prints and antique maps for the gallery in their retirement travels. Owner-artist Eve Turek, a nature and landscape photographer, also hand-colors antique prints at customer request. Yellowhouse Gallery's reputation for excellent Outer Banks custom framing has found new energy with Pete Turek's careful eye and 50+ years of custom construction experience. Whether you want a simple modern frame or an museum quality framing job for your new collectible, Pete can create a masterpiece for you to proudly display in your home or office.
We gave the Yellow House Gallery a face-lift inside and out, and we invite you to see the modern collection, which now features even more local artist prints. Additionally, we have new gallery space devoted to original artwork, featuring many Outer Banks resident artists as well as part-time OBX’ers. For 2008, James Melvin (oil), Chris Haltigan (watercolor), Barbara Gernat (acrylic), Dixie Browning (watercolor) and Nancy Zittrain (oil) join these artists in our Originals space: E. M. Corsa (mixed media), Robin Rogers (acrylic), Mike Rizzo (architectural carvings), Judith Bailey (watercolor, acrylic), Maureen Brady (watercolor), Pete Rudolph (acrylic), Sandra Ball (watercolor, oil, pencil), Hudson Williams (watercolor, carvings), Robin Bagby (watercolor), Diane Luke (watercolor, acrylic, pencil), and Joan Rippingale (watercolor). Local photographers whose original work is featured in Yellow House Gallery include owner Eve Turek, Ray Matthews, Karen Watras, Scott Geib, Chaz Winkler, Karen Sealock, and Anna Gartrell. Be sure to stop in to see these artists’ selected work along with all of our Outer Banks artists. The Yellowhouse Gallery is open Mon – Sat, 10 – 5 and Sun, 12 – 5 in the busy summer season.
